How did you get started in the music industry, and what inspired you to pursue a career in music?

My daddy was a pastor and I played piano in his church as a kid. Got hooked on gospel then did musicals then went to jazz school. Also the sex and drugs, of course!

What inspired you to be part OUTLOUD?

Yall have the best bills! I mean damn, I got to be on a bill with Tinashe and Idina Menzel. Incredible.

How do you want to make an impact through your art?

I want people to kiss to it and get married and buy property and heal the world!

Have you faced any challenges or stereotypes as an LGBTQ+ artist in the music industry, and how have you overcome them?

There’s no lane for like, gay funk. Basically trying to carve out an entire space for myself. Also we just don’t get paid as much and there are always always quotas for how many gays can be on a mainstream bill.

Can you share a particular moment in your career that you consider a triumph or milestone?

Playing James Corden was pretty fuckin rad. But let’s not forget Outloud last year 👀 RULED.

How do you think the music industry can better support and represent LGBTQ+ artists?

Pay us a lot of money and don’t bury us in the algorithm 👅

Can you describe your creative process when developing new music or albums?

I write about what happened to me THAT DAY. Keeps everything fresh and immediate feeling.

What has been your favorite project or performance so far, and why?

I was in a band called moisture boys, back in the day. Truly unhinged. We had a show where did sketches as like, murderous clowns. Highlight of my life.

What advice would you give to other aspiring LGBTQ+ musicians looking to make their mark in the industry?

Just do ya thang, baby. Don’t worry bout nunn.

What are your goals for the future, both in terms of your music career and advocacy within the LGBTQ+ community?

I wanna throw more gay events. I love that shit. I also want to get back to youth mentoring.

What do you want to say to the OUTLOUD and Queer  communities?

Always be the first to dance at the party.

What other LGBTQ+ artists do you want to give a shout out to?

TELAH!
